Off the Wall Ideas for Summer Employment

Finding a summer job is not an easy task. There are a lot more summer job possibilities out there than most people are probably aware of. With a ton of choices ranging from coaching your favorite sport to doing an internship in finance, often the most difficult part of finding a summer job is deciding what type of job is right for you. Often finding the perfect summer job involves looking beyond the jobs that are sitting right in front of your nose and really exploring the possibilities and being creative. Here are some diverse and off the wall ideas that you may not have been thinking about.

One great job opportunity that many students neglect to consider is the opportunity to work abroad. Getting a job in another country can provide not only a great work experience but a great chance for travel, exploration, and personal growth as well. Being immersed in another culture and having the opportunity to live and work with people of another nationality is more than a job opportunity; it is the opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience. There are numerous opportunities for students of foreign languages to teach English abroad or to simply work for a foreign family as an au pair. Additionally, there exists an extensive network of volunteer opportunities abroad in almost every field of work imaginable. Opportunities for students to work abroad for the summer are plentiful; all it takes to find them is a little bit of creative searching.

A good way to think about finding a job that appeals to you is to look into working at a place that you typically love to visit or spend time at over the summer. Work at an amusement or water park, at a zoo, or at one of the nation’s beautiful national parks. By finding a job at a place where you like to be, you are infinitely more likely to enjoy what you are doing than if you simply choose a job at random or on the basis of what you think everyone else is doing.

Another great way to spend the summer is with a job outdoors. After a long hard school year sitting through classes staring idly out of the window, a summer job outdoors can provide a welcomed change of pace. Summer is a favorite season for many students, a season to get outside and explore. Work as a raft guide, hiking trip leader, or even just as an outdoor programs leader at a summer camp and get the experience of being active outdoors all summer long.

Ultimately, the most important aspect of finding a summer job is finding a summer job that is right for you. It is important to look beyond the typical office or service industry jobs with which most people are familiar. By seeking to have a fun and meaningful experience with your summer job rather than just taking any job you can find and sticking through it to gain some money, your chances of having a great summer and learning more about yourself through the process will be greatly improved.
