Finding summer jobs
Summer jobs can be a great way to make money and have fun at the same time.
There are endless jobs available in the summer from caddying at a golf course
to working at your local fast food joint. The problem for most students is finding
the right job. Most students will settle for a mediocre job even though it might
not pay the most or be the most fun. There are many tools available to help
you find that perfect job allowing you to make money and have a blast during
the summer.
Your summer job search should begin with a brainstorming session. Before searching
through countless ads and applications you should have a good idea of what kind
of job you are looking for. Having a primary goal allows you to be more efficient
in your search and keeps you from wasting time on jobs you don’t really
want. It is much more difficult to start searching with no idea of what you
are looking for and it can take longer to decide and settle on one job. This
is not to say that you shouldn’t keep your options open, but having a
general idea allows you to filter out your search and focus on certain job listings
making your search easier.
If you know exactly where you want to work over the summer, your task will
be much easier. If it is a retail store, all you need to do is go pick up an
application. Most stores will hire seasonal employees and will often hire during
the summer. If you don’t know where you want to work, start by picking
up your local newspaper’s classified section. You can then browse the
listings and narrow down your search by checking what is available. This is
a great starting point and will often result in numerous options for you to
choose from.
Not all summer jobs will have ads listed however. Many summer camps and pools
know that they will get a number of employees just by word of mouth so it is
your job to seek these employers out if that is something you are interested
in. A quick look online or in your local yellow pages can help you see what
pools or camps are located near you. All it takes is a phone call to these employers
to see if they are hiring for the summer. Many employers will overstaff knowing
that some people will quit or simply stop working throughout the summer.
Walking around your town or local mall is another search method. Simply stop
in all of the restaurants and stores you think you may have an interest in working
at and ask if they are hiring for the summer. This is an easy and painless way
to search and you can make a day out of it as well. Most potential employers
that are hiring will have you fill out and application and get back to you a
few days later. The perfect job is never going to find you. It is important
that you go out and be diligent with your search, and you will eventually find
the right job.
